I’ve owned several different size yards over the years, starting from my sprawling yard in my country home on the outskirts of Hunstville, AL, to my townhouse in downtown Hunstville.
But as the size of your yard changes, so do the requirements of your lawnmower, because you don’t want a small lawnmower for a large yard and a big bulky machine for a small yard.
However, buying a lawn mower for a small yard that measures less than 10,000 square feet can be frustrating because the market is flooded with manufacturers trying to deliver bigger, more powerful mowers than their competitors.
Instead of sifting through the hundreds of small-yard lawnmowers, I’ve done the research and compiled a list of 17 best lawnmowers for small yards that includes gas-powered models, cordless models, and electric model options. I’ve also included a detailed buying guide to help you buy the right lawnmower for your needs.
In a rush? These are the ones I recommend. But keep reading if you want more info on each.

Best Lawnmower for Small Yards Buying Guide
There are a few things to consider when on the shopping trail for the best lawnmower for small yards such as the type of mower, wheels, and engine.
Type of Mower
Push Mowers or Reel Mowers
A push mower aka reel mower does require a fair bit of effort to push along the lawn, but I’ve found them to be better suited for small yards owing to their small size.
Reel mowers also provide exceptional cut quality and a complete unplugged mowing experience, so if you’re willing to break a sweat, they are worth considering.
But reel mowers aren’t for everyone especially the elderly or those suffering from certain types of ailments. Push mowers can also be powered by a battery, gas, or an electric cord.
If your lawn is on an incline, I wouldn’t recommend buying a reel mower because it will require a fair bit of muscle power.
Gas-Powered Mowers
Gas-powered mowers are generally more powerful than most electric or battery-powered mowers and are often built tougher.
On the downside, gas-powered mowers are louder than battery and electric mowers, and more costly to run. They also require more maintenance in oil changes, and fuel preservation in the off-season and generate carbon emissions.
If you’re not a fan of high decibels and old gas, skip the gas-mower option. But if you appreciate power and performance, a gas mower wins hands down.
Electric Mowers
Electric mowers are my recommendation for small yards and are both eco-friendly and make less noise during use. Best of all, with electric mowers, you never have to worry about running out of battery or gas juice.
Many homeowners and lawn care professionals say that an electric mower provides an easy, affordable mowing experience for simple-shaped lawns and lawns that measure up to one-quarter of an acre.
Some electric mower models also work well for half-acre lawns, but regardless of the size, would you want to haul around a cord for even a quarter of an acre?
Even though most corded lawnmowers are extremely lightweight, you’ll need a conveniently placed electrical outlet to run them.
Corded mowers can also be challenging to power through thick or tall grass but make a great choice for small suburban lawns.
Battery-Powered Mowers or Cordless Mowers
Battery-powered aka cordless mowers were once considered weaklings compared to the mighty gas mowers. But with the latest technology, the performance of most bestselling cordless models has greatly improved, some even much better than certain gas-powered mowers.
Cordless lawnmowers are a viable option for small to medium size lawns and are quieter, emission-free operation, and low maintenance. Battery-powered mowers don’t always stack up to gas mowers and tend to slow down or stop when cutting thicker grass.
When choosing a battery mower for small yards, you also have to consider mowing time or battery runtime on a single charge, or else you’ll find your charging the battery frequency and end up doing more than one mowing session on a small yard.
Most of the battery-powered mowers on my list of best lawnmowers for small yards come with two batteries and a couple of models such as the Makita feature dual ports and uninterrupted runtime.
Self-Propelled Mowers
Self-propelled mowers are the new kid of the block that carries the weight for you and manually pushes the mower – all you need to do is stand behind and guide it in the right direction.
They are mostly available in gas versions, and pushing a heavy mower around your lawn can be quite taxing on your body, particularly if you’re not that physically fit.
I’d consider a self-propelled mower for a medium size lawn, and for a small size lawn if I’m not able to push a regular mower around.
Small yards don’t take that long to mow anyway, but if your lawn has big open spaces, a self-propelled mower may be a worthwhile investment.
And if your small yard has dips, inclines, and even hills, you will greatly benefit from a self-propelled mower.
However, as good as they may sound, self-propelled lawnmowers aren’t perfect, and the biggest con I find with a self-propelled mower is that it’s heavier owing to the extra components.
This extra weight isn’t a problem when you’re using a self-propelled mower but when you’re not using the tool like when getting it out of the shed or garage and walking it to your lawn.
Mowing Width
When it comes to mowers, size matters, and people often forget to consider the cutting swatch of the respective mower model before making a purchase.
There are 2 things to consider when determining the right size mower to buy:
- The size of your lawn
- How fast you want to get the job done
Take accurate measurements of your lawn if necessary because you don’t want to buy a really wide deck mower because it will be difficult to maneuver in a small yard and a really small size mower means more time spent mowing.
The ideal mowing width for small yards is between 14 inches and 21 inches, which is why I haven’t mentioned any riding mowers on this list.
Type of Engine
Gas-powered mowers are generally fitted with two-cylinder engines or four-cylinder engines. Four-cylinder engines are typically more eco-friendly and efficient compared to their 2-cylinder counterparts.
Mulching and Bagging
If you notice most of the mowers on this come with mulching and bagging features, but what exactly are they and do you need them? The first thing to understand is mulching and bagging are two different features that serve different purposes.
Bagging is simply collecting the cut grass clippings in a “bag” and emptying them outside your yard. Some lawnmower models come with a bag attached to them that collects the grass clippings as you mow so you don’t have to perform this daunting task.
There are 3 benefits of bagging:
- The lawn looks tidy
- It removes the dead grass that may be home for most diseases-causing germs
- The wet dead grass can become more muddy
All newly launched lawnmowers usually come with a mulch and discharge function.
Mulching is the process of chopping the grass into finer pieces and distributing them evenly through your lawn.
Whether to mulch or not depends on you, but is the norm because the finer pieces of grass work as natural fertilizers to promote lawn health.
Another big reason to mulch and discharge is that it is less time-consuming than having to empty the grass collection bag.
Starting Mechanisms
Reel lawnmowers are pretty much a no-brainer to use by simply maneuvering them across your lawn so there’s no rope to pull or button to press.
Electric and cordless mowers can be started with a push of a button, but starting a gas-powered mower can be a bit tricky and require a little elbow grease:
- Check the level of gas in the tank (no gas, no start)
- Press the fuel button a fuel times
- Put the throttle in the start position if your mower has one
- Pull the starter rope
The starting mechanisms on gas-powered mowers take some time to get used, so if you’re not up for the task and one that you have to perform every time you want to use the mower, I’d look at buying a cordless or electric lawnmower.
Handle and Comfort
Some mowers come with a padded handlebar, which makes them a joy to push for longer periods. Others come with an ergonomically designed handlebar, which reduces strain on your hands during use.
Wheels
Mowers can come with either plastic or rubber wheels – two small at the front and larger two at the rear. Regardless of what they’re made from, the wheels should be tough enough to help the mower ride on any type of terrain.
FAQs
Q. What size mower do I need for a small yard?
A. 14″ to 21″ mower is ideal for a small yard and anything wider may be hard to maneuver in your lawn. If you have a very small yard, you may be better off with a smaller reel lawnmower.
Q. What size is considered a small lawn?
A. The definition of a small yard varies across individuals but is typically under 1500 square feet.
Q. How big should your yard be for a riding lawnmower?
A. Riding lawnmowers aren’t a great choice for small yards but are designed to be used on sprawling lawns. If your lawn measures less than 1500 square feet, a riding lawnmower is not a good choice.
